Equip Your Child To Handle Bullies – Part 2

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post.

As I mentioned in part one of myEquip Your Child To Handle Bullies” post last week, October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month, so it is an opportune time for PMA_Logo_smallerparents, teachers and children to learn how to take action against bullying. Previously, I told you about an organization right in our neighborhood that is training kids of all ages in personal safety, as in bullying prevention, through an all-encompassing karate curriculum designed to aid in self-confidence, character development, physical fitness and so much more. That organization is PRO Martial Arts (PMA).

kid-kick2This week, I’m excited to share about the PRO Martial Arts ARMOR® program. Designed by child psychologists, educators and law enforcement officials, ARMOR® is a program designed exclusively for PRO Martial Arts. An ARMOR® class is just 25 minutes in length and is offered as a FREE elective for any students ages 6+ enrolled in a PRO Martial Arts class. Comprised of 12 weekly lessons on Bullying Prevention and 12 separate lessons on Predator Prevention, students will learn how to combat both bullying behavior and predator activity–both online and on the playground. Every lesson is a stand-alone, ensuring students can enter the course at any time.

During the Bullying Prevention segment your child will learn how to:

  • Recognize bullies and not become their victims
  • Carry themselves with confidence
  • Set and respect personal boundaries
  • Be assertive when seeking help
  • Use the martial arts to defend (as a last resort)

During the Predator Prevention segment your child will learn:

  • About listening to their instincts–the “uh-oh” feeling–and to tell a trusted adult about their uneasy feelings
  • The difference between appropriate and inappropriate adult behaviors
  • The importance of good communication between them and their parents
  • The real issue isn’t just strangers, but STRANGENESS

My ARMOR® Class:
I had the opportunity to sit in on one of the ARMOR® classes recently.ARMOR_small I must say that I was quite impressed. The class began with interactive questions between the instructor and the students to get them thinking about real life situations and then evolved into a practice session on what to say and do if a predator tries to harm them.

Then, they physically practiced punches, kicks and where to strike the predator to protect themselves. The take-away for me was that kids were being empowered to defend themselves if needed. I absolutely love the psychology behind that philosophy. As parents, we cannot be with our children at all times. The ARMOR® program knows that and has taken a proactive approach to truly arming our kids with what they need to stay safe.

Equip Your Child To Handle Bullies – Part 1

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post.

Has your child been bullied? Mine has. At his very first summer camp experience last summer, my five-year old son was bullied by an eleven-year old boy. As a parent, I felt shocked, helpless and angry. Because the camp staff refused to handle the situation with the fervor we expected, my husband and I pulled him out of the camp.

PMA_Logo_smallerSince October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month, I’m excited to tell you about an organization that is training kids of all ages in personal safety, as in bullying prevention, through an all-encompassing karate curriculum designed to aid in self-confidence, character development, physical fitness and so much more. Let me introduce you to an organization right in your neighborhood… PRO Martial Arts.

A Little Background:
PRO Martial Arts (PMA) is a nationwide company with facilities in 22 states and Canada. It was founded in 2008 by Pennsylvanian resident Ed Samane who was bullied as an overweight 11-year old. He found a solution to the bullying through karate.

What’s Cool About It:
Because of the impact bullying had on Samane’s self-esteem, he developed a unique karate instruction curriculum that offers a bullying prevention and predator prevention component…the ARMOR® program. It’s the only martial arts program that offers it. I’ll share more about ARMOR® in another post.

Programs In Your Neighborhood:
With facilities in Hoffman Estates, IL St. Charles, IL and other Chicagoland locations, PMA offers a variety of martial arts classes throughout the week and on Saturdays for kids of all ages. From their Little Rhinos program, specifically for 3- to 5-year olds, their Basic program for 6-to 12-year olds and their teen/adult programs (ages 13+), students will learn the basic moves and principles associated with the martial arts such as kicking, punching, rolling, and falling, as well as more advanced skills such as self-defense, choreographed technique and more. Of course, everything is taught in an energetic and kid-friendly manner. Different colored belts will be earned along the way as students test out of their level and move up to the next one. Many locations, including Hoffman Estates, offer kickboxing classes for adults as well.

coupon_smallerWhat else?
Depending on the age of the student, classes run 30 to 40 minutes in length. Parents are welcome to stay and watch in the waiting room. Payment may be made on a monthly basis and enrollment is always open so kids can join at any time! Talk about convenient!

Top Picks: Sept. 26 – 28, 2014

LKF-Ads-Web-IntraSportsComplex-728x90-web(2)Parker_sept12Happy Weekend! I am glad to report that I obtained my first apple cider donuts of the season at a local (cheap – $3 per person) pumpkin-type farm where my child had a wonderful time running around a hay bale maze, digging in a giant sandbox complete with fun trucks and shovels, climbing through a hay bale maze tunnel, posing for too many photos, (kinda) feeding some farm animals and fully indulging in Fall fun. Oh, how I love this season! If you want to know where this (cheap) pumpkin-type farm is in our area, post your question below in the blog comments section and I would be happy to tell you! And if you have any suggestions for (cheap) pumpkin-type farms in our area ($5 per person admission or less), please post below as well. I’m sure the other readers would appreciate it!

In my Top Picks this weekend, you can still take a FREE trial class with Lil’ Kickers Soccer For Kids at the Intra Sports Complex in Elgin! I will be out there with my son doing that very thing, so why not come out and say hello, as I would love to meet you!
