LKF-Ads-Web-IntraSportsComplex-728x90-web(2)

Parker_sept12

Welcome to my “Top Picks” for this weekend! Are you as ready for fall as I am? I say, bring on the apple pickin’, pumpkin farms, beautiful trees, apple cider donuts, caramel apples, costume prepping, and harvest partying! My favorite season begins next Monday, September 22nd (yes, it’s the First Day of Fall)…and I’m ready to celebrate it with a traditional dutch apple pie! It’s kind of our family tradition now…

In my Top Picks this weekend, you can still take a free trial class with Lil’ Kickers Soccer at the Intra Sports Complex in Elgin! Or, if you are ready for your first Scarecrow Festival of the season, head to Hoffman Estates’ Vogelei Park. Plus, there is a whole lot more fun happening in our area communities noted below. Best of all, the events listed are all FREE or CHEAP! And if they ask who sent you…tell them The Mommy did!

DISCLAIMER: Although I am careful to report accurate dates and times as they are provided, I realize that sometimes I receive inaccurate information, events may be cancelled or I simply make a boo boo. I strongly encourage you to confirm the information before heading out and/or to click the link that is provided for each activity to check the details.

Lil’ Kickers Soccer Open House

LKF-Ads-Web-IntraSportsComplex-728x90-web

Mommy By The River is excited to give my loyal blog readers a special invitation to a fabulous FREE event taking place in Elgin on September 6 & 7, 2014…The Lil’ KickersSoccer For Kids‘ Open House! Kids age 18 mos. through age 9 and parents will have an opportunity to sample what the Lil’ Kickers soccer program is all about through a variety of games and activities. Make sure to scroll down to the very end of this post for complete details! The Lil’ Kickers Fall Session begins Tues. Sept. 9th, so it is the perfect opportunity to check it out!

This event will, of course, be listed in my Top Picks next weekend, but I wanted to give you a sneak peek of this exciting event so you can invite your friends, your neighbors and even your friends’ neighbors to an open house experience you will not want to miss! And if they ask who sent you…tell them The Mommy did!

BuNxrMeCAAARQbfFirst, a little background:
Lil’ Kickers is a nationally renowned, non-competitive child development soccer program that was founded in 1999 and now serves 650,000 boys and girls nationwide. The Intra Sports Complex in Elgin is now home to Lil’ Kickers and is one of only a few locations in our immediate area to offer the program.

What’s cool about it:
This isn’t just a soccer class. Lil’ Kickers has developed a program that understands how kids learn best. They have done this by hiring child development professionals who have created the classes to aid children in social, emotional, cognitive and physical skills. Kids will learn the game of soccer through a highly creative approach. Plus, they have skilled coaches who know everything there is to know about playing soccer!

pic2The man to know:
I had the pleasure of speaking with Thomas Cahue, the Lil’ Kickers Coordinator for Elgin. Cahue said, “In Lil’ Kickers, we don’t just teach soccer to kids. Instead we use soccer as a tool to teach kids about teamwork and cooperation. Kids have a blast learning the fundamentals of soccer while building coordination and confidence – a great combination for growing children.”

Want to enroll your child in the Fall Session?
If you enjoy the Open House, perhaps you will want to enroll your child in the Fall Session, Sept. 9 – Nov. 26, 2014. Classes are 50 minutes in length and offered on Tuesday & Friday between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Enrollment is always open so kids can join at any time (classes are pro-rated). BONUS: If you enroll your child in the Fall Session at the Open House Sept. 6 or 7, they will throw in a FREE Lil’ Kickers jersey! (I just love FREE, don’t you?)

Can’t make the Open House?
Never fear. You can always schedule a FREE Trial Class to see if you like it!

Top Picks: August 22 – 24, 2014

Places to take kids in Elgin IL, Fox Valley eventsAhhhh, the weekend. I know that many of you have kids that just went back to school. Did you cry a little? Do a happy dance? Maybe a little of both? I have a few more days until mine starts kindergarten (can’t believe it), so I am really cherishing these moments and trying to pack in a few more fun days and lots of snuggle time. I really do feel that life is flashing before my eyes!

As we head towards a new season, I am looking for photos of your family and/or your kiddos having fun together to feature on my “Top Picks” each week (in place of my “Top Picks girl!) I think it’s time to retire my little “gold digging” friend! If you would like a chance for your family or kids to be featured, please send one or two of your faves to editor@mommybytheriver.com. Close-ups are preferred. In the subject line note “Top Picks photo,” and provide names as you want them printed (or tell me you want names withheld). I think it would be great fun to see some of you on my blog, don’t you?

StCBT_StCBT_JSFamilyFun_BlogIn my Top Picks this weekend, make sure you head to a ‘Mommy’ favorite–Elgin’s International Festival, complete with all things cultural! Then, before it disappears forever, check out “The Adventures with Clifford the Big Red Dog” exhibit at the Gail Borden Public Library because it leaves Elgin on Monday. Best of all, the events listed below are all FREE or CHEAP! And if they ask who sent you…tell them The Mommy did!

DISCLAIMER: Although we are careful to report accurate dates and times as they are provided, we realize that sometimes we receive inaccurate information or events may be cancelled. We strongly encourage you to confirm the information before heading out and/or to click the link that is provided for each activity to check the details.

Top Picks: August 15 – 17, 2014

Places to take kids in Elgin IL, Fox Valley eventsHello and happy weekend! How have you done on your “bucket list” this summer? With another season winding down, sometimes it’s good to make a list (I’m a chronic list maker) of all the places you went so you can see that your summer actually was COOL!

What’s on my list? Pool – western town – amusement park – mini zoo – many playgrounds (3 new ones we had not tried before) – trip to Michigan – mini golf – Cantigny Park – movie in park – movie in theater – Millenium Park – ice cream – LEGOLAND – parade – and many of the events I shared in my Top Picks these past couple of months. And, it has been fun meeting many of you in passing this summer, when I’ve slipped you my “mommy card” to tell you about my blog.

StCBT_StCBT_JSFamilyFun_BlogAs we start to head towards a new season, I wanted to let you know that Mommy By The River will start to look a bit different here and there as I implement some much needed changes. I will still have the same content you have come to rely on for your family fun, but hope to refresh the look a bit and get my “Top Picks” to you earlier to allow you to plan for your weekend. And now….let’s get on with my picks!

In my Top Picks this weekend, you won’t want to miss out on the St. Charles Bank & Trust Company Family Fun Day, featuring Cold-Blooded Creatures. Top Picks: August 8 – 10, 2014

Hello to my faithful readers! How was your week? It was a crazy one for me. From having two extremely sick family members (my son and my husband were, shall we say, woofing cookies), our aging Beagle who also decided to woof cookies (after snatching toast remnants, hamburger bits and wrappers from the trash can), and a mom (as in The Mommy’s mom) who had water leaking into her home from a townhouse neighbor’s broken water heater, I am ready for some serious down time!  So let’s get ready for a fun-filled weekend!

Places to take kids in Elgin IL, Fox Valley eventsIn my Top Picks this weekend, you won’t want to miss out on the “Get Pop-Cultured: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Storytime” at  Barnes & Noble in Spring Hill Mall.
